CHURCH NURSE EDUCATION PROGRAM (CNEP)
A Basic Preparation Course for Church Nurses

The Church Nurse Education Program (CNEP) trains nurses to start health ministries in their churches. CNEP utilizes the Basic Parish Nurse Preparation Curriculum of the International Parish Nurse Resource Center, St. Louis, Missouri. The American Nurses Association has recognized parish nursing (church nursing) as a specialty in nursing.

THE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this program, the participant will:

  • Embrace the integration of faith and health as central to the church nurse role.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge, attitude, and skills to practice as a novice church nurse.
  • Value a peer system of support.
  • Be able to identify a network for continuing development and support.
  • Make a personal commitment to continued spiritual formation so as to more effectively perform the church nurse role.

THE VIEW
Participants in CNEP should come prepared to spend time:

  • Reflecting on your vocation as a nurse.
  • Sharing your faith with others.
  • Praying, singing, and rejoicing!
  • Stretching your understanding of faith and nursing.
  • Enjoying an informal, retreat-like atmosphere.

THE COMMENCEMENT
The service is usually held in the late afternoon on the last day of class. The class will select one of its peers to issue a challenge to the graduating class. Class members will also offer input in developing a class vow as they commit themselves to this ministry during the commencement exercise.

LAY HEALTH ADVOCATE PROGRAM (LHAP)
A Basic Preparation Course for Lay Health Advocates

 

For anyone without a nursing background, we offer the Lay Health Advocate Program (LHAP) to train those wishing to start a wellness ministry. We use the community health worker curriculum as published by The University of Southern Mississippi and Duke University. The course is ideal for church members, pastors, community health advocates, ministry leaders and social service employees.

CONTINUING EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

The McFarland Institute is approved to offer continuing education units for registered nurses through the Louisiana State Nurses Association. In addition to these scheduled activities, special CEU offerings may be offered throughout the year as needed.

$250 for churches outside these parishes.
